This year Natali, Edgardo and I spent our August holidays in Gran Canaria.
Short comments on this holiday.
I found the island in worse conditions than I expected.
Devastated by a mass tourism and environmental degradation.
On the other hand, the inner part of the island where the real "Canarios" live, I discovered an uncontaminated nature, beautiful landscapes and typical small villages with genuine and helpful people.
I also drove through the road CG-210 from La Aldea de San Nicolàs to Artenara which is incredible for what it looks like, and which I recommend to all those who are willing to visit the island.
In the late afternoon of the first day I went to La Charca, a wetland located near the lighthouse of Maspalomas to memorize the way to drive every morning from the hotel where I was staying.
On the way back, I noticed in the middle of the Plain Swift ( Apus unicolor ) ,common birds in the Canaries, a black silhouette with a deeply forked tail.
I wondered what a Barn Swallow (Hirundo rustica )was doing among the Swift, but when it turned showing me the back I noticed the white rump.
At that moment my eyes lit up immediately and the joy was immense, because I had seen my first White-rumped Swift ( Apus caffer )in the most unexpected way!

Ho trovato l’isola in condizioni peggiori di quanto me l’aspettassi.
Devastata da un turismo di massa indescrivibile e un degrado ambientale da far venire i brividi .
Viceversa all’interno dove vivono i veri “Canarios “ ho scoperto una natura incontaminata,bei paesaggi e paesini tipici veramente carini, con gente genuina e disponibile.
Ho anche percorso un tratto di strada la CG-210 da La Aldea de San Nicolàs ad Artenara che ha dell’incredibile per come si presenta e che consiglio a tutti quelli che sono intenzionati a visitare l’isola .
Nel tardo pomeriggio del primo giorno mi sono recato a La Charca , una zona umida situata presso il faro di Maspalomas per memorizzare la strada da percorrere ogni mattina dall’hotel dove soggiornavo.
Sulla via del ritorno , ho notato in mezzo ai Rondoni unicolore ( Apus unicolor )uccelli comuni alle Canarie , una sagoma nera con la coda molto forcuta .
Mi sono chiesto cosa facesse una Rondine ( Hirundo rustica )in mezzo ai Rondoni , quando però si è girata mostrandomi il dorso ho notato il groppone bianco .
In quell’istante i miei occhi si sono immediatamente illuminati e la gioia è stata immensa , perché avevo visto il mio primo Rondone cafro ( Apus caffer ) e nel modo più inaspettato !
... e poi si voltò a guardare il sole ...
